You might get annoyed if you stare at the shut down screen for a long time and nothing happens. There could be many reasons why you are experiencing this problem.

1. Check the Running Processes

Your computer may not shut down because an app or process is still running. You can use the Task Manager to find and close any running apps. Also, see the Processes tab.

When you shut down your computer, Windows saves the system files used by the startup process. While this makes your computer start up faster, it has the negative effect of shutting it down.

By default, Fast startup is enabled in Windows 11, so you need to turn it off manually to solve the shutdown issue. Here’s how you can do it:

6. Run the SFC Scan

7. Remove the Laptop Battery

If your computer has a removable battery, there is an old trick to turn off your laptop. Remove your battery, wait a few minutes, and replace it. Then, try to close Windows as usual.

8. Update Windows Version

Windows 11 is a new operating system, so Microsoft is still ironing out the details. If you haven’t updated your system in a while, you may encounter various bugs or glitches, such as the inability to shut down your computer.

To update Windows 11 to the latest available version, launch Settings and click Windows Update. Then, click on Check for updates button.

9. Use System Restore

If no updates are available, and you haven’t shut down Windows, you can go back in time using a restore point. As long as you have enabled System Restore on your computer, you should be able to use it to restore your Windows 11 system.

10. Disable Delivery Optimization

Windows uses the Delivery Optimization feature to install updates faster on computers connected to the same network. When a computer downloads an update from your device, Windows 11 won’t shut down until the download is complete. To prevent this from happening, you should disable Delivery Optimization.

  1. Press Windows key + I to bring up the Settings menu.
  2. selection Windows Update > Advanced options.
  3. Head to More options and click Delivery Optimization.
  4. Turn off the Allow downloads from other PCs option.

If you think Windows 11 is not shutting down because of incorrect settings or a third-party app, and you don’t know how to fix it, you should try resetting your system.

Windows 11 will be reinstalled, and during the process, it will remove any apps you have installed and return your system settings to their default values. Also, you can choose whether you want to keep or delete your personal files.

12. Force Turn It Off

If you’ve tried these fixes and still can’t get Windows 11 to shut down, there’s another solution. You can shut down your computer by pressing and holding the Power button for a few seconds. Before doing this, close all apps and save your work.

However, if you’re using an older computer, this method may damage the hardware, and you may not get an answer as to why your computer won’t shut down on its own.
