Back-to-school tax holiday 2022 in Alabama: Discounts on clothing, computers, supplies

Alabama’s annual school sales tax holiday kicks off this weekend for many school-related items.

Shoppers can catch a reprieve from the state’s 4% sales tax on many clothing, electronic and school supply options — but they should consult the state’s limits on items and purchase amounts to make the most of the holiday.

The holiday starts at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 15 and ends at midnight Monday, July 18.

Some Alabama school districts are trying to get the word out to residents.

This holiday went into law in 2006 and is now in its 17th year.

Some of the untaxed purchases per item include clothing ($100 or less), laptops ($750 or less), books ($30 or less) and stationery items ($50 or less).

You can view a full list of both exempt and non-exempt products here and a list of all Alabama cities participating here.
