Quincy College to start offering bachelor’s degree in computer science

QUINCY – Quincy College will offer a four -year bachelor’s degree program in computer science starting in January.

This is the school’s second bachelor’s degree program. The community college, owned by Quincy, only offered a two-year degree until last fall when the state approved a bachelor’s in business administration program.

The Quincy College campus debate raises the question:Should the town run a college?

“This is an example of building success,” Servet Yatin, provost of Quincy College, said in a statement. “We owe it to our students and our community to expand our baccalaureate offerings into the high-demand computer science field.”

The state higher education department approved the new program based on quality, enrollment potential, student interest and local workforce need, the school said. There are thousands of open computer science positions in the state with salaries ranging from $ 90,000 to $ 122,000.

The school’s computer science faculty is creating new courses and modifying existing classes to meet the requirements for the bachelor’s degree.

The new program is open to all Massachusetts residents, and Quincy will work with community college students in the state to transfer. The school already has agreements with Roxbury and Bristol community colleges.

Current computer science and technology classes are listed online at a cost of $ 302 per credit. No specific tuition information is available for the new program.
