Security breach at Vt. health center may have exposed patient information

MORRISTOWN, Vt. (WCAX) – A breach of computer security at a Morristown health center could put a patient’s medical information at risk.

Lamoille Health Partners of Morristown is investigating suspected unauthorized computer activity that caused the care provider to shut down its computer systems for more than a week in mid-June.

“We’re not sure what happened but following our protocol and due to environmental sensitivity that’s why we notified the FBI, and they worked and we collaborated with them on our investigation,” said Stuart May, CEO of Partners at Lamoille Health.

At this time, it is unclear if Lamoille Health’s servers were intentionally attacked or if the suspicious activity was the result of something like malware or a virus.

May admitted that they did not tell patients about the violation and she did not know when they would do so.

“Once we get to that point where we feel we have more information to share, of course we will do that at that time with any state or federal requirements for reporting these types of violations,” May said. .

The center’s decision to withhold public awareness is something patients say is worrying.

“I didn’t even know about it,” said one patient who declined to share her name. “I mean this is my information. I won’t give away my Social Security anymore, I know you shouldn’t, but what else does it look like they can access? Who will get it and who will take advantage of it? ”

They believe the center should be more accessible to patients regarding violation and potential exposure.

“This is a very difficult situation. I think looking at it as a parent and as a former employee, there are a lot of things in it and I know there is a lot of pressure on their hands, but at the same time, the patients need to know what happened, ”said a former employee and patient.

But Lamoille Health says patients shouldn’t worry.

“Patients and the community here in Lamoille County are quite welcoming and very comfortable with the way we manage it,” May said. “I don’t think there’s any need to worry about current patients, future patients or employees.”
