School District Y115 OKs $188,000 for kindergarten computers – Shaw Local

YORKVILLE-Plans to implement a new full-day kindergarten program in School District Y115 include new computers for children.

The Yorkville School Board approved on June 27 the purchase of 525 computers for $ 188,469.

Each prospective kindergarten student will be provided with one of the Dell 3100 2-in-1 touchscreen Chrome Books.

Earlier this spring, the school board decided to offer a full -day kindergarten classes in Yorkville schools.

Chrome Books issued by kindergartners can only be used at school and not taken home. Students will receive a new computer when they move into the first grade.

The kindergarten plan includes a schedule that will extend the school day to seven hours from the current three hours under the half -day program, including an additional 110 minutes of instruction.

The mornings begin with “exploratory play,” in which young students are allowed to choose a game or activity of their choice, followed by language, science, math and physical education instruction.

The afternoon will include recess and lunch, followed by additional math, science and exploratory play, with art or music instruction.

Kindergarten sections are in the range of 17 to 21 students each.
