Record numbers of students choose Computer Science A Level in 2022

More students than ever before are sitting in Computer Science A Level exams this year, with data revealing that it is now the fastest growing subject.

An analysis by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT found that entries in England taking Computer Science A level increased by almost 18% last year.

Even if there are multiple routes to a tech career, BCS says the topic’s growing popularity is important to the talent pipeline working in areas like digital health and climate change.

A BCS study of provisional data by Ofqual showed that 15,210 students are sitting at Computer Science A Level in England this year, up from 12,930 in 2021. This increase of 17.6% is the largest increase of any A Level. subject.

This is the highest number of entrants in England since and a 57% increase over the past five years, BCS, the professional body for information technology, added.

Growing demand for computer science

Demand for computer science is also rising in higher education, with a BCS analysis earlier this year showing that computer science degree study applications are also rising by 13% – the largest increase in any subject in universities in the UK.

Dr Bill Mitchell OBE, Director of Policy at BCS, said: “An A level in Computer Science can help develop the thinking skills needed to address the major challenges facing society, even that of health care, climate change, or digital divide.
