ATLANTA, GA, June 23, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE)-ChildCare Education Institute® (CCEI), an online child care training provider dedicated exclusively to early care and education workers, proudly introduced CUR133: Unplugged Computer Science in the Early Years in the online catalog of child care training courses.

Computer programming, coding, and associated computational thinking (CT) skills and thinking are especially important to thrive in today’s academic and professional landscape. As these skills are identified in curriculum frameworks, there is an increased focus on introducing coding beginning in preschool and Kindergarten. It provides opportunities, as well as challenges, to early teachers and caregivers of young children. One of the biggest challenges faced by early educators is how to introduce coding in playful, developmentally appropriate ways that are less reliant on screen time or expensive technologies. This is where the Computer Science (CS) Unplugged movement comes in! CS Unplugged promotes the teaching of coding and computational thinking through games, puzzles, crafts, and more.

Since the launch of the original CS Unplugged activities and website, many schools, education companies, and organizations have adopted the screen-free and unplugged approach, adapting the guiding principles for their settings. Around the world, researchers and educators have created many new unplugged activities, some of which are shared on the CS Unplugged website, and many more independently exist on their own websites, books, and curricula using term “unplugged.” In the world of early childhood, the unplugged approach is adopted because it is well aligned with the principles of early learning best practices for hands-on and playful learning.

In this course, ECE professionals will learn about the Unplugged Computer Science (aka “CS Unplugged”) educational movement and the many benefits of taking an unplugged, or tech-free, method of teaching about computing. in the early years. The demand for this course is determined by examining industry trends. This course will focus on free and traditional play materials and activities that teach and reinforce STEM concepts, without the need to purchase robotics kits or expensive technology.

“The course will provide teachers with the resources and activity ideas to explore STEM concepts without the need to purchase any new technology,” said Maria C. Taylor, President and CEO of CCEI. “Free and unplugged activity ideas can help children engage in vital STEM learning without the need for expensive technology tools.”
